History

The Pintubi Homelands Health Service operates an independent Aboriginal medical service at Kintore. It was established in 1984 and provides primary and acute health care for the population of Kintore. The Health Service focus is on preventative and primary health care with special emphasis on immunization, infant nutrition, child health, ante natal care, health women and men checks, aged care and chronic disease management. The Health Service uses an electronic patient recall system. The Health Council successfully lobbied the Federal Government for funds to build a new clinic. This was opened in 2003. Western Desert Dialysis runs a dialysis unit forms the clinic. A full time Renal Nurse is employed to care for patients using this service.

Accommodation

The health accommodation at Kintore is of a good standard and quality. It comprises 4 three bedroom houses with ensuites, 4 self contained 1 bedroom flats and 1 2 bedroom duplex. The accommodation is decked out with comfortable beds, linen, washing machine, cooking utensils and TV. All the housing is air-conditioned and there is plenty of hot water.

Health Council

Eight local people are elected to the Health Council each year, in accordance with the Aboriginal Corporations Act. The President of the Health Council is Cameron Brown.

Immunisation Program

Pintubi Health Service is part of the General Practice Immunisation Incentive Scheme run by the Central Australian Division of Primary Health Care. Since the Scheme started in 1997 the immunisation rates for the Health Service have improved substantially. The Health Service have a Purpose-built vaccine fridge called an Arcus which meets with the new best practice guidelines from the NHMRC.
